Understanding Personality Disorders

Personality disorders come in several forms. Each form relates to certain persistent and unhealthy thoughts or behaviors. These thoughts or behaviors can cause people to have difficulty maintaining relationships, which can lead to problems at work and in day-to-day social interactions. Based on the symptoms and characteristics of each disorder, personality disorders are categorized into clusters.

Cluster A personality disorders:

Cluster A personality disorders typically involve unusual thoughts or behaviors, such as extreme paranoia. Schizoid personality disorder is an example of a Cluster A personality disorder. People living with this disorder show little to no interest in forming relationships with others and often have difficulty expressing emotion, making people think they don’t care about anything that’s going on around them.

Schizotypal personality disorder is a similar disorder that also falls under Cluster A. People with schizotypal personality disorder are often considered odd or eccentric. They distrust others, find it challenging to form close social relationships and often struggle to respond to social cues. They may also be prone to having unusual beliefs or superstitions.

Cluster B personality disorders:

Several disorders fall under the classification of Cluster B. One of the most well-known is borderline personality disorder (BPD). People with BPD may have difficulty managing their emotions. They’re often impulsive and may struggle to have long-term relationships because of their difficulties. It’s common for individuals with BPD to fear abandonment yet also experience intense and inappropriate anger, which friends and loved ones are often the target of.

Histrionic personality disorder is less well-known than BPD. A consistent, long-term pattern of excessive emotional outbursts and attention-seeking behavior characterizes this disorder. Individuals with histrionic personality disorder have a poor sense of self-image and feel a need to be noticed. They may experience rapidly shifting emotions and feel uncomfortable if they aren’t the center of attention.

Another Cluster B diagnosis is narcissistic personality disorder. The term “narcissist” is thrown around casually quite frequently these days. However, it’s a real diagnosis with a clear definition. People who have narcissistic personality disorder lack empathy and feel a strong need for admiration from others. They believe they’re unique and can become angry or volatile if this worldview is challenged. Narcissistic personality disorder can lead to self-destructive behaviors and unstable relationships.

Cluster C personality disorders:

Those who are prone to anxious, fearful thought patterns may qualify for a diagnosis of one of the Cluster C personality disorders. These include:

  • Avoidant personality disorder. Someone who’s very shy and tends to avoid the company of others due to fear of rejection may have an avoidant personality disorder.
  • Dependent personality disorder. This disorder is characterized by an individual tending to become dependent on others to the point they might accept poor treatment out of fear of being abandoned by that person.
  • Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Someone who feels the need to be in control and who has perfectionist tendencies may have obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. These individuals are quite inflexible and show similar symptoms to people living with obsessive-compulsive disorder, but there are some differences in the diagnostic criteria.

Our Approach to Treating Personality Disorders at Camelback Recovery

At Camelback Recovery, we take a holistic approach to treating mental health disorders and personality disorders. As one of the leading personality disorder treatment centers, our first step is to perform a comprehensive assessment to fully understand each patient’s circumstances, including any co-occurring disorders. Based on this assessment, we develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to their needs.

Our services include:

  • Therapy and counseling. Through a mixture of individual and group therapy, as well as family therapies, we can address the emotional and psychological challenges faced by each of our clients.
  • Medication management. Not every treatment plan includes medication, but some individuals benefit from medication to reduce withdrawal symptoms or treat anxiety or other co-occurring issues.
  • A holistic approach. Our approach to mental health care includes mindfulness, therapy, medication (where appropriate) and lifestyle changes to give people the coping skills they need for long-term recovery.
  • A safe and supportive space for recovery. Our residential treatment center is a safe space for people to address their mental health, and our staff always offer compassionate, nonjudgmental support.

The Risk for Co-Occurring Substance Abuse and Personality Disorders

It’s common for substance abuse and personality disorders to co-occur, and people who are struggling with both of these issues can find it challenging to break the cycle of negative thoughts and behaviors. Individuals living with personality disorders often find themselves faced with professional and social difficulties, and this can make them vulnerable to substance abuse.

Some risk factors for co-occurring personality disorders and substance abuse include:

  • Anxiety. Cluster C disorders are often associated with anxiety, which can impair decision-making and increase a person’s tendency towards high-risk behaviors.
  • Isolation. Poor, unstable social relationships may lead to people feeling isolated and self-medicating out of sadness, stress or anger.
  • Substance dependence. Frequent use of drugs or alcohol, whether as a crutch or out of a desire to be noticed, can lead to people developing a tolerance and taking increasing amounts of the substance to achieve the same effect.
